Atopic dermatitis, also called Eczema, is a chronic condition characterized by having itchy inflammation of the skin. Healthy skin retains moisture and protects against different irritants and bacteria. Eczema stops the skin’s ability to protect against the environment and allows it to be affected by irritants, allergens, and other factors. Eczema can be worsened by dry skin, chemical irritants, stress, temperature change, infections from bacteria, allergens, and hormones. There are no lab tests to determine if someone has eczema. Typical a doctor will examine the skin and look at family history to make a diagnosis.
