Antipsychotics are a class of medications that are prescribed to treat psychosis, which can cause hallucinations, paranoia, and delusions. Antipsychotic medications may also be helpful for people suffering from anxiety, agitation, problems with mood, thinking and socializing.
Psychosis is diagnosed through a psychiatric evaluation. That means a doctor will watch the person’s behavior and ask questions about what they’re experiencing. Medical tests and X-rays may be used to determine whether there is an underlying illness causing the symptoms.
Most antipsychotic medications are tablets, capsules or liquid taken every day. Some antipsychotic medications are available as an injection. Antipsychotic medications are not addictive.
